What is Family Child Care?
en español
Family Child Care is best described as a small child care
business offered in a loving, safe, home environment.
Anyone who cares for children from more than one family is required by law to obtain a license.
The
State Department of Social Services is the
agency that providers must go to become licensed. The homes must meet certain
health and safety requirements which ensure that the home is free from defects
or conditions that might endanger children. This includes
 |
having both smoke
detectors and fire extinguishers in the home,
|
 |
all adults who live
in the home must have
 |
a TB test,
|
 |
finger prints on file
with Social Services,
|
 |
a Department of
Justice criminal record clearance, and
|
|
 |
the provider must
also have 15 hours of Pediatric CPR, Pediatric First Aid, and Preventative
Health and Safety.
|
Periodic evaluation
and on-site visits are conducted by the Community Care Licensing staff.
Family child care
provides a vital community service and is a viable choice for many working
parents. The FCC home provides warm and loving care and guidance for children to
develop while away from their parents in a setting that is safe, secure,
healthy, and homelike. Activities are provided that help children grow
physically, socially, mentally, and emotionally.
Many parents prefer a
family child care home to center based care because the number of children in
care is much smaller so their child can receive more individual attention.
Consistency of care from the same provider is also an important factor when
choosing family child care.
Family Child Care is
a specialized business, NOT baby-sitting, that is finally receiving the
recognition it deserves. Besides being child-care specialists, providers are
also expected to be reliable small business owners who offer information and
support to parents as well.
